Home·Guides·Appointment vs walk-in
Guide · Updated August 2026

Do you need an appointment at the MA RMV?

Short answer: learner's permit, driver's license, ID, and CDL visits need an online appointment. Registration and title work doesn't require one — you can still walk in — but since August 2026 you can also book an appointment for it, the same way. This page lists every category and appointment type you can book on Mass.gov.

What you can book online

Mass.gov's scheduler has four categories. The first three require an appointment booked online before you visit a service center. CDL work is one of those required categories — it is not part of the learner's permit list. Registration and title is the exception: walk-in is still fine, and booking is optional.

Registration and Title Services

Walk-in eligible — booking optional since August 13, 2026.

Registration and title work has never required an appointment — you can walk in at most service centers. Mass.gov added this fourth booking category so you can also schedule ahead the same way permit, license, and CDL customers do. Walk-in is still fine; booking is new, not required.

  • Transfer My Out of State License and Registration to Massachusetts

  • Transfer a Plate Between Two Vehicles

Frequently asked questions
