How to register a car in Massachusetts

Registering a vehicle — new purchase, out-of-state transfer, or a title-only transaction — doesn't require an appointment. The process

Gather your documents

Choose walk-in or book ahead

Registration and title work is walk-in eligible at most centers. Visit a service center

Sales tax (or an exemption) is handled as part of the transaction. Plates and a registration are issued the same visit for most transactions.

Do you need an appointment?

No — registration and title transactions are walk-in eligible at most service centers, and always have been. Since August 13, 2026, you can also book an appointment for the same transaction through Mass.gov's Registration and Title Services category, if you'd rather have a set time than wait in line.
